Features include a retail and commercial district, a promenade focused on nonprofit activities, an educational district, a residential district, a hotel district, an office district, and a park/open space area along the boat channel.
- Shelter Island is a destination for many boaters who come to San Diego for relaxation and vacation. What better place to dock your boat at while you enjoy restaurants, nightlife, hotels, the multiple marinas, and more. The island was originally a sandbank in San Diego Bay, visible only at low tide. It was built up into dry land using material dredged from the bay in 1934. and It was developed in the 1950s
